Dali Games

Exhibition

Salvador Dalí was an artist with boundless curiosity who was constantly in search of the latest technical developments in order to apply these to his creations. Micromat lifespan 1 0 13. From the mid-1960s and throughout the 1970s, his interest focused above all on virtual images and depth. This moment coincided with the preparation and subsequent inauguration of the Theatre-Museum and the painter indeed dedicated some of the museum's spaces to optical illusions: anamorphosis, stereoscopy and holography. At the end of the route around the museum, the Optical Illusions Room, number 19, recreates the result of the painter's studies in this field.

This temporary exhibition, in the room 22 of the Dalí Theatre-Museum, highlights the artist's later work related to optical illusions. Six pairs of stereoscopic works will be on display accompanied by equipment to observe the three-dimensional effects: Dalí from behind painting Gala from behind immortalized by six virtual corneas momentarily reflected in six real mirrors, c. 1972-73; Gala's foot, c. 1975-76; Untitled. According to ‘Las Meninas' by Velázquez, c. 1975-76; The structure of DNA, c. 1975-76; Dalí's hand drawing back the Golden Fleece in the form of a cloud to show Gala, completely nude, the dawn, very, very far away behind the sun, 1977-78; Dalí lifting the skin of the Mediterranean Sea to show Gala the birth of Venus, 1978.

Salvador Dali, Spanish Surrealist painter and printmaker, influential for his explorations of subconscious imagery. He depicted with realistic detail a dream world where commonplace objects are often metamorphosed in a bizarre and irrational fashion. His most famous of these works is The Persistence of Memory (1931). Sign in to like videos, comment, and subscribe. Watch Queue Queue.

The content in this piece is so thought provoking that it defies all matter of time. There is, of course, a creation date for the bizarre, surreal masterpiece. In 1929, Salvador Dalí gave birth to The Lugubrious Game, impressing and intriguing fellow surrealists, Paul Éluard, and also his wife Gala. The glowing impression that Dalí engraved into the art world with this piece led to him becoming an official member of the 20th century surrealist movement.

The piece is breathtakingly busy. One could spend hours, days, or more, analysing it; and still be unsure of exactly what Dalí was trying to say. One thing is certain, though. The Lugubrious Games is the passionate, risqué portrayal of a deeply disturbed, sexually centred man. It is adorned with Dalí's erotic fantasies and fears, subtly placed about the piece. Each one speaks metaphorically of his fixations. The statue's dramatically oversized hand, for example, suggests to onlookers that the subject of masturbation is present and commanding. Perhaps, the focal point of the piece is the man in the corner. He is wearing soiled underpants, which display a clear and vivid reference to faeces. Crippling fear, sexual desire and castration are all thought to play a role in this aberrant, surrealist, piece of art.

The Spanish surrealist, Dalí, created The Lugubrious Game using oil paints and collage art. Originally, the piece was on cardboard; but like all great artwork, prints have been made for adoring fans to cherish as their own. Now, as he passed away in January 1989, copyright on all of Salvador Dalí's work, including The Lugubrious Game, is held by the Spanish State. The original piece, however, is in the hands of a private collector - Charles de Noailles - a French nobleman and patron of the arts. He purchased the piece in 1929 for an assumed 29,000 Francs. Since then, The Lugubrious Game has been displayed in many exhibitions across the world, but always makes its way home to the Noailles family.

We are pleased to display our recent acquisition, a 1932 exquisite corpse – a collaborative piece by Salvador Dalí, his wife Gala, surrealism leader Andre Breton and painter Valentine Hugo.

In creating an exquisite corpse, each 'player' contributes a part of a drawing, folds the paper to conceal it, then passes it on to the next player for their contribution. The resulting image often resembles a monstrous creature – mismatched legs, torso and head. The goal was to utilize chance in producing something potentially more poetic than what an individual would produce.

In this exquisite corpse , Dalí provided the gun and knife; Gala added arches; Breton contributed hands and an upside down puppet; Hugo provided the foreshortened female torso. It is now on display in the Museum's James Family Wing alongside two examples of decalcomania which is also a game as well as an artistic technique. The Surrealists enjoyed game playing as a source of poetic inspiration.

In decalcomania, ink is applied to a page, which is folded and opened to reveal an abstract symmetrical pattern. The artist then makes changes to bring out a suggested image. Dalí's Head of Donkey resembles an insect when inverted; Gala's Untitled/Decalcomaniais asymmetrical, abstract and mysterious.
